THE EFFECT OF USING CATCH THE BALL TECHNIQUE ON STUDENTS’ ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILL AT THE EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN 1 KADUR PAMEKASAN ACADEMIC YEAR 2012/2013

Speaking is one of basic skill besides reading, writing, and listening that should be studied in English learning. According to Nunan, successful oral communication involves developing: the ability to articulate phonological features of the language comprehensibly, skill in taking short and long speaking turns, skill at management of interaction, using appropriate formulae and fillers.
There are two problem statements in this study. The first one is whether there is an effect of catch the ball technique on students’ English speaking skill at eighth grade of SMPN 1 Kadur. The second one is how significant catch the ball technique affects students’ English speaking skill at eighth grade of SMPN 1 Kadur.
This study is to find out the effect of catch the ball technique on students’ English speaking skill at eighth grade of SMPN 1 Kadur, and to know how the significant is catch the ball technique. This study is quantitative research and the design that use in this study is true experimental design. There are two variables in this study; they are catch the ball technique as independent variable, and students’ English speaking skill as dependent variable.
In this study, the population is the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Kadur academic year 2012/2013. While the sample is the students at eighth A and B grade which consists of 38 students. The instruments which are used are test and documentation. The obtained data was analyzed by using independent t-test, since, it compare two group (experimental and control group).
The result showed that there is an effect of catch the ball technique on students’ English speaking skill at eighth grade of SMPN 1 Kadur, and the effect of catch the ball technique is statistically significant at the level 5%. It is proven that the obtained ttest is higher than ttable (9,69 > 2,70).
Based on the result above, it suggested for English teacher to aid the students to increase their speaking skill by using various technique in teaching speaking. It is suggested for students at SMPN 1 Kadur to practice their speaking skill in daily life in order to can speak English well. For further researcher, hopefully The researcher hopes this research will give contribution to the readers in conducting research in English teaching learning process especially in speaking learning.
