The Effect of Numbered-Heads Together Technique on Students’ Speaking Ability at The First Grade of SMP Negeri 3 Sumenep

The students often find some problems in speaking English, especially the students at the first grade of SMP Negeri 3 Sumenep. The problem frequently found is that their native language causes them difficult to use the foreign language. Other reason is that they feel unconfident, shy and afraid to speak English up, lack of vocabulary and error pronunciation. To overcome those problems, the teacher can use numbered heads together technique.
The main problem of this study was whether using numbered-heads together technique effects on students’ speaking ability at the first grade of SMP Negeri 3 Sumenep, and how significant is the effect of numbered-heads together technique on students’ speaking ability at the first grade of SMP Negeri 3 Sumenep.
This thesis is written to find out whether numbered-heads together technique effects on students’ speaking ability at the first grade of SMP Negeri 3 Sumenep, and to measure how significant numbered-heads together technique effects on students’ speaking ability at the first grade of SMP Negeri 3 Sumenep.
In this research, the researcher used quantitative research design with correlational approach. The instruments for collecting the data in this research were questionnaire and documentation. The population of this research is all students at the first grade of SMP Negeri 3 Sumenep. The researcher takes one class as a sample randomly, the sample is class VII-1 consist of 29 students. This research was done since May 22, 2012 until June 7, 2012. The technique of data analysis used in this research is statistical analysis exactly product moment correlation.
The result of this research showed that the students who are taught by using numbered-heads together technique in teaching speaking has an effect on their speaking ability at the first grade of SMP Negeri 3 Sumenep. It was proved from the result of data analysis and hypothesis testing that showed “r” value of this research that is 0,845 is more than ”r” value of the table product moment correlation with the case number is 29, that is in level 5 % and 1% the value is 0,367 and 0,470. While based on the table of product moment interpretation, the value of this research that is 0,845 is in between 0,70-0,90 with strong level.
Based on the result above, the researcher concludes that there is a significant effect of numbered-heads together technique on students' speaking ability at the first grade of SMP Negeri 3 Sumenep. The using of numbered-head together technique on students’ speaking ability should be continued as one of techniques since it could improve and increase the students’ speaking ability.
