A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Argot Used by Vendors at Srimangunan Market Sampang

The study refers to sociolinguistic study, because sociolinguistic is the study between society in relation with language. Language is a social phenomenon that cannot be separated from the activities of human life. It also brings them into a relationship with their environment. In the view of Wardhaugh theory, as stated in Sociolinguistic’s book, that society and language are influence each other. It showed that language has many function related to the society with one of the language characteristics such as language is a creative and unique expression of human communication.
Language has many variations in the form such as argot is made up by the certain community in certain place. This language is not based on the grammatical rules. Argot is a social phenomenon that formed from the special and unique language. According to Hadumod argot may refer to any specialized vocabulary or set of expression. The vendors at Srimangunan market like another community at Srimangunan market Sampang, but they have special language that use as their daily language to communicate in avoiding the buyer’s understanding about the price.
There are three problem statements in this study. The first one is how the argot language used by vendors at Srimangunan market. The second is how the phonological rules of the argot language in order to know the formula of the argot language, and the third is what is the meaning of the argot language. The writer attempts to observe how the argot language used by vendors with the formula due to the theory of Barry.
This research is used descriptive qualitative study. The goal is to describe the phenomenon found during the research. The data were collected by doing observation, documentation and interview. The data is taken from the vendors at Srimangunan market Sampang.
As the result of the study, the writer finds out that the argot language used by vendors at Srimangunan market Sampang is only formed by rearrange the word and give the addition di in the middle of sound. This language used as special language in order to deceive and to avoid the buyer’s understanding about the merchandise
