An Analysis of The Main Characte’s Conflict in Paulo Coelho’s By The River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept

Literature is the expression of the someone’s experience, feeling and imagination. It deals with Edward H. Jons’ statement in Outline of Literature; literature is simply another way we can experience that world around us through our imagination. Literature include poems, novels, magazine etc. novel is narrative prose fiction, usually in story form. In novel, there are some aspect can be analyzed and studied for education such as conflict in the story. Conflict can happen for everyone, include the main character of the story.
There are three focus in this research. The first is it is true that the main character conflict to her childhood friend, Brida, an old man, a priest, her nature and herself. The second is how the main character’s conflict come to the climax. The third is how the main character solve the problems.
The writer uses descriptive research in the kind of research and psychological approach in the approach of research. The writer also uses some method to get the data. Such as data source, research instrument, data collection procedure, and data analysis.
The result of analyzing in Chapter III as The Description of The Main Character’s Conflict, we can find that the main character is a strong woman and independent. She also has a curios nature. She always wanted to know what happen with her childhood friend. In other hand, she was fear and jealous. She did not want to loss him anymore. She was jealous because he closer to the angel than her. We also can find the conflicts that happen with the main character, such as social conflict, psychological conflict and physical conflict.
The result of an analyzing in chapter IV show that conflicts that happen with the main character. The conflict happen when Pilar was left by her childhood friend. When she knew that he would give lectures to the small group in Madrid, she surprised. She thought that he was too young to give lectures. Then she made a trip for four hours to Madrid. She more surprised whe she saw him. He was quite different with the man whom Pilar had knewn. When she met met him, they decided to make a trip together to Bilbao. On the way to Bilbao, Pilar tried to remember about their childhood adventure. But her childhood friend only responded minimally. It made Pilar regret with her decision to come him. When they arrived in the center of town, Pilar asked her childhood friend to go down her there. But he did not stop his car. Pilar insisted to go down there. But he wanted her to accompany him to his conference. Finally, she followed him. After the conference finished they continue their trip. They celebrated the holiday of Immaculate Conception. She felt jealous when she saw him closer to the angel than her. The conflict came to the climax when Pilar’s childhood friend told to the Pilar that he wanted to serve to world by his love to Pilar. But Pilar did not want her childhood friend left his path. Pilar still wanted him to continue his path. Pilar could not think. She was climbing back without him. Then, she was unconscious. When she woke up, a women was standing beside her. Pilar told to her what happen with her. Then the women gave her paper and pen. She asked Pilar to write what Pilar felt. After that throw it to the river Piedra. Every morning, Pilar did it. One day her childhood friend came to the river Piedra and invited her to go from the monastery Piedra.
