A Literary Criticism of Figurative Language and Meaning in Maya Angelou Poem on Rachmat Djoko Pradopo’s Perspective

Poetry is one branch of literature. It is meant, poetry is some expression from the poet feeling, expression and her imagination. To express ideas or feelings, the language of poetry is not the same with everyday language, because poetry is the expression of feelings that translated of the poet in the wording of the verses that make figurative language and has a deep meaning.
There are two-research focuses in this study. The first one is what are the figurative languages used in the Phenomenal Woman, Woman Work and Momma Welfare Roll poems of Maya Angelou on Rachmat Djoko Pradopo perspective? The second is what are the meaning in the Phenomenal Woman, Woman Work and Momma Welfare Roll poems of Maya Angelou on Rachmat Djoko Pradopo perspective?
This study is to critic about the kinds of figurative language used in the Phenomenal Woman, Woman Work and Momma Welfare Roll poems of Maya Angelou on Rachmat Djoko Pradopo perspective and about the meaning in the Phenomenal Woman, Woman Work and Momma Welfare Roll poems of Maya Angelou on Rachmat Djoko Pradopo perspective.
This study will describe through of qualitative approach with descriptive research. The qualitative approach meant is, the writer describe the data within words form. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentation techniques. The data take from three poems above of Maya Angelou, and then the instrument used is the text of the poem. The writer looking for, read and conclude the data which contained the figurative and meaning on Rachmat Djoko Pradopo perspective.
The result showed that in the phenomenal woman, there are three kinds of figurative language, they are; simile, metaphor and personification. The meaning of this poem is the woman that has the determination to be herself. In the woman work there is one, it is personification. This poem tells us about a single parent that has responsibility to take care her children and did her obligation as a housewife. In the Momma Welfare Roll there is one figurative language, it is irony. The meaning of this poem is the discrimination about a woman that has different ethnic and performance.
Based on the result above, this thesis serves about poem as literary work. Hopefully this thesis will give contributions for English students study program in understanding a literary work which as a teacher of language literature learning in the future on curriculum of Senior High School. The writer hopes for the next researcher, to understand the way to critic the poem whether in understanding the figurative language and meaning. Then, for the next researcher it suggested to increase the critic of the poem as detail as possible.
