Reading is one of four language skills which is taught in educational setting. Reading needs some technique to make the students easy in understanding the content of a material or a text. As stated by Slavin in cooperative learning, cooperative integrated reading and composition technique is one of cooperative learning techniques that is used especially to teach reading and writing. It can make the students comprehend the material easily.
There are two research problems in this research. The first, whether students taught using cooperative integrated reading and composition technique have good reading comprehension at the tenth grade of MA Aqidah Usymuni Pandian Sumenep or not, second, Is there any statistical significance of using cooperative integrated reading and composition technique on students’ reading comprehension at the tenth grade of MA Aqidah Usymuni Pandian Sumenep.
This research is conducted to measure the effect of cooperative integrated reading and composition technique on students’ reading comprehension at the tenth grade of MA. Aqidah Usymuni Pandian Sumenep, and to measure the statistical significance of effect of cooperative integrated reading and composition technique on students’ reading comprehension at the tenth grade of MA. Aqidah Usymuni Pandian Sumenep.
The population of this research is the tenth grade of MA. Aqidah Usymuni Pandian Sumenep of 2011/2012 academic year that consists of 24 male students and 26 female students. The instruments which were used by researcher in conducting the research were questionnaire and documentation. The researcher collected the data from 19 January to 08 March. This research used quantitative approach with non experimental design and the kind of this research was correlational research. Data analysis technique that researcher used in this research was statistical analysis, while the statistical analysis that researcher used was product moment.
The research result showed that there is effect cooperative integrated reading and composition technique on students’ reading comprehension at the tenth grade of MA. Aqidah Usymuni Pandian Sumenep with sufficient significance. It is proven from the result of statistical analysis. The result is 0,466. It is more than the value of table coefficient correlation “r” product moment in “significance level” 5% and 1% with N50 in which the value is 0,297 and 0,361. and then the researcher compared it with the table interpretation “r” product moment. It is between 0,40-0,70 with sufficient interpretation.
Based on the result of this research, cooperative integrated reading and composition technique has to be more developed. It should be used not only in the tenth grade of MA. Aqidah Usymuni. Besides, The English teacher should be a good facilitator in cooperative integrated reading and composition technique activities in order that the students can comprehend about the material well and the students easier in identifying and explaining the topic of the story.
