The Study on Diction and Figurative Language of Charles Simic’s Poems.

Literature is human’s expression about this life. Literature often attempts to convey something important about life. In studying literature we will need a sharp of sense. In this research, the researcher want to discuss about one of literary work namely poem. Poem is literary work that has beautiful words and full of poet’s imagination. So that, the researcher choose poem because it’s more challenging. Poem can be analyzed from diction and figurative language. In this case the researcher will analyze poem from diction and figurative language, because in diction and figurative language there are many elements that can be analyzed and most of people find difficult on it. Poems that choose by the researcher are poems that written by Charles Simic. The poem consisting literary decide that is rather difficult to understand by the readers.
There are two problem statements in this study. The first one is what kinds of diction and figurative language found on Charles Simic’s poems. The second one is what are the meaning of diction and figurative language found on Charles Simic’s poems.
This study is to find out the kinds of diction and figurative language on Charles Simic’s poems and to find out the meaning of diction and figurative language on Charles Simic’s poems. There are two variables in this study: they are diction and figurative language, as independent variable, and Charles Simic’s poems, as dependent variable. The researcher had found by analyzing text with content analysis approach.
In this study, the data source is three poems are written by Charles Simic. The title of three poems is: Private Eye, To The One Upstairs, Read Your Fate. Data collection in this research is observation text. Observation text which the researcher that read the poems of Charles Simic, on the title Private Eye, To The One Upstairs, Read Your Fate. And the researcher find sentence that refers to language of the poem and choose the diction and a precise meaning, and refers to figurative language.
The result showed that there are many diction and figurative language on Charles Simic’s poems. In the sentence “my window has grown illegible”, “window” is diction, the diction is rather difficult to understand if it is showed from lexical meaning, because the meaning found in dictionary. The lexical meaning of window is a fact or piece of evidence that help to solve a problem. And if it is showed from contextual meaning is easy, because the meaning is the set of fact or conclusion of the sentence. The contextual meaning of it is present bad point of life. It sentence refer to figurative language, namely personification, because the window describe having human characteristic.
Based on the result above, it is suggest for the readers to read poem repeatedly and clearly to get the right meaning. The readers suggested giving input to the researcher about any lacks of this study. Last, the other researcher is suggest to do further researcher.
