THE EFFECT OF TEXTBOOK REDABILITY ON STUDENTS READING COMPREHENSION AT SMP AL MUJTAMA' PLAKPAK PEGANTENAN PAMEKASAN

In academical setting, reading is one of language skills which is taught and reading material, such as in junior high school, is provided through textbook which the teacher provided before the instruction runs in which it is published by certain publisher. While, in a view of Aslanian theory, as stated in David Nunan, reading comprehension of readers depends much on text variables, such as sentence structure and length, vocabulary intensity and other text variables. In the case of readability, those variables are some factors that involve in determining text readability.
There are two problem statements in this study. The first one is whether there is an effect of textbook readability on students’ reading comprehension at SMP Al- Mujtama’. The second one is how significant textbook readability affects students’ reading comprehension at SMP Al- Mujtama’ Plakpak Pegantenan Pamekasan.
This study is to find out the effect of textbook readability on students’ reading comprehension at SMP Al- Mujtama’ Plakpak Pegantenan Pamekasan and to measure how statistically significant textbook readability affects students’ reading comprehension at SMP Al- Mujtama’ Plakpak Pegantenan Pamekasan. There are two variables in this study; they are textbook readability, as independent variable, and students’ reading comprehension, as dependent variable. The former was found by employing documentation with content analysis approach and the latter was measured by employing test.
In this study, the population for independent variable is all English textbook used in SMP Al- Mujtama’ and the population for dependent variable is all students in SMP Al- Mujtama’. While, the sample for dependent variable is English textbook used in eighth grade of SMP Al- Mujtama’ and the sample for dependent variable is eighth grade students consisting of 71 students. Research instruments which are used are documentation and test. Documentation was to obtain text readability level in textbook by using Flesch formula and it obtained three readability levels. They are fairly easy, standard and fairly difficult. While, test was to obtain students’ reading comprehension on reading texts in textbook. There are texts which were examined, as samples, they are at the level of fairly easy, standard and fairly difficult. The study took place for two weeks, from 26th February – 12th march 2011. The obtained data from test was analyzed by using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) formula. Since, it compared more than two groups.
The result showed that there is an effect of textbook readability on students’ reading comprehension at SMP Al- Mujtama’ Plakpak Pegantenan Pamekasan and the effect of textbook readability on students’ reading comprehension at SMP Al- Mujtama’ Plakpak Pegantenan Pamekasan is statistically significant at the level of 0.05. It is proven that the obtained F- ratio is greater than F- table (3, 37> 3, 04).
Based on the result above, it is suggested for English teacher to aid students in increasing their reading comprehension by providing textbook which contains English texts which is readable for students and appropriate for students’ language level and determining text readability level before giving to the students. It is suggested for students at SMP Al – Mujtama’ to read more English reading texts in textbook and understand them well, for librarian to provide English magazine, comics and so on in order the students can get the text which they like and for head school to build a good environment for English development.
