Hodaifah 2011. The Correlation Between Students’ English Pronunciation Scores and Students’ English Speaking Ability at the Third Semester of English Teaching Learning Program STAIN Pamekasan. Thesis: Under Graduate (SI). Tarbiyah Department, English Teaching Learning Program, Advisor: Hj. S. Sumihatul Ummah Ms, M. Pd.
Key Words: English Pronunciation Scores, Speaking Ability.
In studying English, there are five skills to be mastered namely grammar, listening, reading, writing, and speaking. In those skills, speaking seems intuitively the most important; people who know a language are referred to as “speaker” of that language, as if speaking included all other kinds of knowing and many foreign learners are interested in learning foreign language. There are four categories must be fulfilled in speaking skill namely fluency, comprehensibility, pronunciation, and structure.
There are two problems of this research. The researcher wants to know whether there is correlation between students’ English pronunciation scores and students’ English speaking ability at the third semester of English Teaching-Learning Program STAIN Pamekasan or not. The researcher also wants to know whether students’ English pronunciation scores is significant on the students’ English speaking ability at the third semester of English Teaching-Learning Program STAIN Pamekasan or not.
The research design of this study is using quantitative approach while the design of this research is correlational descriptive design. There are two variables in this study namely Students’ English Pronunciation score as variable X and Students’ English speaking Ability as variable Y. The population of this research is the students of English Teaching Learning Program STAIN Pamekasan at the third semester. The students are divided into five classes namely A class with 32 students, B class with 33 students, C class with 34 students, D class with 33 students and E class with 32 students. Then, the total number is 167 students. The sample that is taken is E class with 32 students by using Random sampling technique. This research is conducted for four months since January until April (determining instrument and collecting data). Since this research use quantitative approach with non- expremintal design, so the research analysis is done by using statistical form namelly product moment. The data is taken through documentation technique which is used for variable X and test used for variable Y.
The result of this research shows that the correlation between students’ English Pronunciation score and students’ English Speaking ability at the third semester of English Teaching Learning Program STAIN Pamekasan is very significant. It is proven from the result of correlation coeficient product moment shows that observed r (0.8212402) is higher than r product moment table in significant level 5% with N= 32 is (0,349). So it includes to the table interpretation between 0,800 till with 1,000 in the level of high interpretation. Then, the hypothesis which states there is correlation between students’ English pronunciation scores and students’ English speaking ability at the third semester of English Teaching Learning program STAIN Pamekasan is accepted in the level of high interpretation.
Based on this observation, it is known that there is correlation between students’ English pronunciation scores and students’ English speaking ability at the third semester of English Teaching Learning program STAIN Pamekasan. It means that English pronunciation effects students’ English speaking ability. So that, if the score of students in English Pronunciation is high, the students will speak English well so that they will get high score in English speaking. But, if the students get bad score in English pronunciation, they will get bad score in English speaking ability. So, English pronunciation should be increased by the students and lecturers of English Teaching Learning Program STAIN Pamekasan to increase their English speaking since it is known that English pronunciation has significant role in speaking comprehension.
