Jaftiyatur Rohaniyah 2011, The Analysis of SMS Texts Using Word Formation Process: A Morphological Approach. Thesis, Tarbiyah Department, English Teaching Learning Program, the State of Islamic College (STAIN) Pamekasan, Advisor; Mulyadi, Ss. M.Pd.
Key Word: Short Message Service Text, Word-Formation Process.
The reason of researcher in taking the title “The Analysis of SMS Texts Using Word Formation Process: A Morphological Approach” is because, she has an inspiration from the word Short Message Service. The word short here means a simple message. In making a simple message, the users of SMS communication need a way in forming short expression in writing message in order to make the message as simple as possible without losing the essential meaning in that message.
Talking about short expression, it is related with the word-formation process. It is the way in forming new expression either in shortening word or deleting a part of word. In this case, the researcher want to know if that morphological process implemented as the way in writing message in Short Message Service. So that, the researcher here do a research which is focused on “how is SMS text written?” and “what morphological process involved on that SMS text?”
To make an easy research, the researcher tries to collect kinds of SMS text step by step gotten from her friends in her hand phone just want to know the written form of that message and the process of creating new expression in it, until finally, she collects thirty SMS text as a data to be analyzed into word formation processes. That data will be documented in this research. In analyzing the data, the researcher analyzes all expression in that SMS text and classifies into kinds of word formation process descriptively.
After doing analysis, finally, the researcher found 157 expressions on those thirty SMS texts that almost all messages use word formation processes in creating new expression. The morphological process that mostly used in that expression is multiple process (55 expressions), while the other processes are clipping (48 expressions), borrowing (29 expressions), miscellaneous (11 expressions), acronym (7 expressions), blending (4 expressions) and derivation (3 expression). Those all are the finding of this research.
The conclusion is the morphological process is a good way in creating new expression to make a shorter expression in writing SMS text. That way is really relevant with the means Short Message Service. So, the researcher hope to the reader of this thesis and the users of SMS communication to be exist in using that morphological process.
