The Analysis of Madurese Phonological Interference on Student English Communcation at MA Nurulhuda Boarding School Pakandangan Bluto

Phonological interference happens when speakers use language sounds
from other languages to express words in their native tongue. Phonological
interference happens when the speaker pronounces the English word, then the
words have interfered with other sounds of the native language. Based on
researcher's observation at MA students of Nurulhuda boarding school
Pakandangan Bluto, in pronouncing the English word, there were some
differences from English Standard. The pronouncing of English in those words
have been influenced by the sounds of phonemes in Madurese. The purpose of
this research is to find out the Madurese phonological interference of on student
English communication and the factors that influence the phonological
interference on students English communication at MA Nurulhuda boarding
school Pakandangan Bluto.
There are two research focuses in this research focus. These are : 1. What
kinds of Madurese phonological interference occured on Madurese students in
English communication at MA Nurulhuda boarding school Pakandangan Bluto? 2.
What are the factors that influence the phonological interference among students
in English language communication at MA Nurulhuda boarding school
Pakandangan Bluto?
This research approach, the researcher used a qualitative approach.
Researchers are interested in qualitative research because of the objectivity of the
data in accordance with actual reality without any outside intervention even from
the researcher themselves. The data sources were obtained through interviews,
observation, and documentation. Nineteen (19) words were pronounced by the
students. The students' pronunciation were transcribed into phonetic transcription
and then analyzed. The object of this research was students of MA Nurulhuda
boarding school Pakandangan Bluto.
Based on the results of this study, some words are included in the type of
phonological interference: 1 Sound Replacement: the word that into the sound
replacement is thank, think, that, this, there, weather,.Usually, weight. 2. Sound
Addition: the word that into the sound addition is yes, no, trough ver, nice, much,
knowledge, key, knife. 3. Sound Ommision: in this research, the researcher did
not found sound omission in the students English communication. And the factors
that influence the phonological interference are: 1. Language structure mastery
and English pronunciation 2. Vocabulary mastery 3. Self-confidence 4. Language
style.
