Analysis of satire on Simon Armitage’s Five Poems

Some people may be able to read and understand the content of the message in the poem easily, but not a few have difficulty understanding it, even people who read poetry with the aim of reading only to want to know in general the meaning of the poem. Anger and Happiness of others feeling that can be written in the form of a poem with a beautiful choice of words. Talk about word choice and meaning in poetry, one of the meanings of poetry that we can learn is the meanings of poetry that we can learn is the satirical style of language. Satire studies part of figuring out the meaning of poetry. In this the research focus the first is What type of satire are on Simon Armitage’s five poems, and the second is What the function of the satire style used on Simon Armitage’s five poem.
The researcher used kind of research is library research and the approach is observation approach. The source to be used in this research is the poetry of the poet Simon Armitage to obtain data. While, other sources are journal articles, books and thesis that can be used as references to complete the main data to be studied. The researcher used Observation and documentation. Familiarizing and Organizing, coding and reducing, interpreting and representing used analysing of data. The researcher analysed five poems entitled “I Say I Say I Say, To His Lost Lover, Give, The Golden Toddy, The Jay”. While, the researcher used theory from Luke Edley and Magdalena Kusniati about the types and function of satire.
The conclusion, the researcher found 40 data which are include into: the first is what the types of satire on Armitags’s five poem, and what the function of satire style used on Armitage’s five poem. Namely the types of satire are Menippean, Juvenalian, and Horatian. The functions of satire are irony, parody and sarcasm. Every point there is five poems containing 20 data of type of satire and 20 data of function of satire. The first is based on what the types of satire, there are Menippean 7 data, Juvenalian 9 data, and Horatian 4 data. The second based on function of satire there are Irony 10 data, parody 2 data, sarcasm 8 data.
