The Use of Song Lyrics as Media in Teaching Reading at the Ninth Grade of MTS. Darul Hikmah Torjun Sampang

Reading is one of the language skills. How to persuade students to want to
read the text is sometimes frustrating. They are reluctant to dig up a lot of
knowledge by reading several books or articles. It is important to find the right way
to engage students in reading practice. The researcher found that teachers teaching
English used song lyrics media, especially in the field of reading. The teacher uses
this method to get students interested in English lessons, especially in reading so
that students do not get bored if reading is just reading texts. Songs are a part of life
around the world that people like to listen to, most students like to sing or listen to
songs. They copied the singer's speech by reading the lyrics to express their
intentions. Learning lyrics means reading extensive literature. In this research there
are two research focuses, the first is how teachers use song lyrics as a media in
teaching reading and the second is what are the strengths and weaknesses in using
song lyrics in teaching reading. a wide reading.
The researcher use qualitative research as a research approach, and
descriptive as a type of research. The data source is a teacher who teaches English
in the ninth grade of MTs. Darul Hikmah Torjun Sampang and also students who
are in class nine MTs. Darul Hikmah Torjun Sampang. In collecting data
researchers analyze by identifying data, classifying data, analyzing data and
drawing conclusions. In addition, to get the validity of the data researchers used
triangulation.
The results showed that the teacher applied the use of song lyrics as a
medium for teaching students to read in several steps. This method is the use of
song lyrics to make students interested and enthusiastic in participating in learning
or teaching and learning English. This makes students feel easy to express their
ideas so that they will be able to read by themselves interspersed with songs while
singing using the lyrics of this song as the medium and capturing the contents of
the lyrics, making students feel happy and enthusiastic during the teaching and
learning process. From the statement above, it is suggested that English teachers
must be creative in making their methods so that students gain more knowledge
about English, especially reading.
