An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in Listening Comprehension at the Third Semester English Department of IAIN Madura Academic Year 2022

This thesis discusses the students’ difficulties in listening
comprehension at the third semester English department of state Islamic
Institute (IAIN) of Madura. This study consist of two research focus are
what are the difficulties faced by students in listening comprehension at the
third semester English department of IAIN Madura and what are the ways
that students do for minimize the difficulties in listening comprehension at
the third semester English department of IAIN Madura.
In this research, the researcher uses qualitative as the approach of the
research and qualitative descriptive as design of research. The data source
of this research is A and B class students at the third semester English
department of state Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Madura. In collecting the
data, the researcher uses two procedures, those are interview and
documentation. In this research, researcher use structured interview in
collecting the data because the researcher can ask the same questions for
each participant, so as to make it easier for the researcher to make
comparisons of the data between participants. For getting the data, the
researcher used triangulation of data source and triangulation of data
collection technique.
After conducting the research, the researcher found that almost all of
the students experienced have same difficulties. It is based on four
categories of students’ difficulties in listening comprehension. The first
students’ difficulties based on characteristics of the message; those are
students found unknown words, limited vocabulary memorization,
unfamiliar topic, and complex grammatical structure. The second students’
difficulties based on characteristics of delivery of the message; those are the
students can not interact directly with the native speakers, native speakers
speak too fast, unfamiliar accent of native speaker and the audio recording
duration is too long. The third students’ difficulties based on characteristics
of the listener; those are the students in a bad mood condition, lack of
motivation in learning English, students unhealthy and students sleepy. The
last students’ difficulties based on characteristics of the environment; those
are in listening class do not using earphones to support listening
comprehension activities and the noisy around the class are the difficulties
that faced by the students at the third semester English department of IAIN
Madura. The ways that students do to minimize their difficulties in listening
comprehension are practice the listening skill through listening to English
song and watching the movie.
