Analysis of English Debate Practice For The Speaking Skill of Students in Mathlabul Ulum Grade IV Ma’hadul Muallimien AlIslami2021-2022 Academic Year

English debate practice is one of effective speaking activity which
encourages students to improve their communication skill in English, a debate is
about the real or simulated issue, the learners’ roles ensure that they have
adequate share knowledge about the issueand different opinions or interest to
defend. But, in the process of English debate practice students often ecounter
some obstacles, which is the obstacles that often found, students difficulty to
express argument. Therefore, this is sure distrub the process of English debate
practice. with this phenomenon then the researcher interested conduct the research
to know more about the obstacles that found in the English debate practice.
In the current research, formulated two questions. How is the process of
English debate practice in Mathlabul Ulum grade IV Ma’hadul Muallimien AlIslami and, what are the obstacles in practicing debate in Mathlabul Ulum grade
IV Ma’hadul Muallimiean Al-Islami. Meanwhile the purpose of this research are
to investigate the process of English debate practice in Mathlabul Ulum grade IV
Ma’hadul Muallimien Al-Islami, to describe the obstacles experienced by students
when practicing English debate at Mathlabul Ulum grade IV Ma’hadul
Muallimien Al-Islami.
This study was a qualitative study using descriptive method of analysis.
Researcher used the technique of interview and observation in obtain data from
the manager of language division and student. To interview the researcher also
used documentary images of interview made in classroom and observation in field
The result of the study showed that the implementation of English debate
practice running smoothly according the rules of the world school debating
championships. The study also showed that there some obstacles in English
debate practice that, requires a longer debate time than before and other obstacles
with regard to student knowledge. There are 4 obstacles that students experience
when practicing English debate that influence the speaking skill of students, there
are: the students does not master of vocabulary, have no knowledge about the
topic, do not understand the topics discussed, and insufficient time to discuss the
topic.
Based on the current research, to avoid the obstacles that found in English
debate practice. Then, the student must overcome what is barrier in English debate
practice that is, mastering a lot of vocabulary, have some knowledge about the
topic that discussed, understand the topics discussed in debate practice, and longer
time to discuss with group mates before the English debate begins.
