The Implementation of Learning Community in Teaching English at Eleventh Grade of MA Tahfidz Ismailiyah Tlontoraja Pasean Pamekasan

Teaching English is the profession of teacher to make people gains the new
knowledge especially in foreign language. One of the approach in teaching English
is learning community, learning community used in the classroom by discussing
with friends that aims to share knowledge and experience in order to use friends as
a source of learning to gain new knowledge rather than studying individually,
therefore the researcher interested to knowing about how the English teacher
implements the learning community in teaching English, and what are the
advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of learning community in
teaching English.
In this research, the researcher used a qualitative approach with descriptive
research. The researcher obtained the data from observation, interview, and
documentation. The English teacher at eleventh grade of MA Tahfidz Ismailiyah
Tlontoraja Pasean become the primary source of this research, while the eleventh
grade students of MA Tahfidz Ismailiyah is secondary source of this research. The
researcher used the data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and
verification as data analysis. Meanwhile, in data validity the researcher used the
triangulation of data sources, triangulation of data collection technique, and
triangulation of the time to verify the data.
The result of the observation, interview, and documentation that was
conducted shows that most of the eleventh grade students stated that the teacher
implemented the learning community in the classroom with divided the students
into several groups then he will give the understanding material to the students.
While, for the advantages and disadvantages of learning community, almost all the
students agree that there are advantages and disadvantages in implementing the
learning community in the classroom. The advantages that stated by the English
teacher and the eleventh grade students such as; improved knowledge about each
other’s work, learning about each other as people, built trust in one another,
confidence to share problems and learn from one another, and improved
collaboration. The disadvantages of the implementation of learning community as
stated by them such as; sometimes students find themselves in uncongenial groups
and wish they could be somewhere else, individuals may fall into group roles that
become fossilized so that some are passive whereas others may dominate, and
groups can take longer to organize than pairs; beginning and ending group work
activities-especially where people move around the class-can take time and be
chaotic.
