Factors Affecting Sixth Semester English Students’ Difficulties in Answering Listening Section in TOEFL at IAIN Madura

TOEFL ( Test of English as a Foreign Language) is one of the English tests
used to measure the English proficiency of non-native speakers. Several universities
in Indonesia used this test to measure the ability of their students in English. The
TOEFL test also can become a rule to apply for job, a requirement for graduation,
and for those who wants to study abroad.
Based on this, there are two main problems in this study, namely: firstly
what are the difficulties on sixth-semester English students in answering listening
section in TOEFL at IAIN Madura, secondly what factors cause difficulties on
sixth-semester English students in answering listening section at IAIN Madura.
The researcher uses a qualitative approach with analysis as its kind of
research. The primary source is in students. While the secondary source, it refers to
books and journals that deal with the difficulties and factors in answering listening
section in TOEFL. To collect the data, the researcher used observations, interviews,
and documentation.
The results of this study indicate that there are several difficulties faced by
sixth-semester English students in answering listening section, namely the speed of
speakers and the length of conversations, accent, vocabulary, idiomatic expression,
and the quality of recorded material. And the factors that caused difficulties on
sixth-semester English students were internal and external factors.
The conclusion there are several difficulties faced by students such as the speed
of speakers and the length of conversations, accent, vocabulary, idiomatic
expression, and the quality of recorded material. And the factors that caused
difficulties on sixth- semester English students were internal and external factors.
