Empowering Language Learner in IAIN Madura: Innovative Approaches to English Language Teaching of FLDP Program

Foreign Language Development Program (FLDP) is a language development
program (English-Arabic) intended for new students of IAIN Madura for two
semesters with forty meetings. Tutors teach the students; in applying the teachinglearning process, they perform some approaches, including the use of technologies
to empower language learners.
This research aims to answer the two research problems. 1) what are some of
the innovative approaches to English Language Teaching that can empower
language learners in IAIN Madura on the FLDP program? 2) how do the tutors
apply the innovative approaches to English language teaching that can empower
language learners in IAIN Madura on FLDP? Therefore, this study identifies some
innovative approaches the tutors use and how they apply them in their teachings to
empower language learners.
This research used a qualitative approach, which was designed descriptively.
This research takes place in IAIN Madura, and the research subjects are the FLDP
tutors of the first-semester and students of the FLDP Program Academic Year of
2023. Three research instruments were utilized: the observation toward the
implementation of an innovative approach to the tutors. Then, semi-structured
interviews were conducted with the tutors to gain data on what kinds of innovative
approaches and how they apply them. The documentation consisting of the FLDP
module and voice records was utilized to complete the data. All the data was then
analyzed by implementing the three flow models by Miles and Huberman, which
involve data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
Based on observation, interview, and documentation, this research revealed
the following points: 1) The innovative approaches found in this research are
divided into two activities, i.e., task-based language teaching and communicative
language teaching. The learning activities used by the tutors were presentations,
small group discussions, role-playing and also the use of technology games and
flexible environments make the teaching learning process special. 2) The tutors
apply innovative approaches in activities such as games, storytelling, small group
discussions, and flexible environments. In teaching-learning, tutors motivated
students to speak up by prioritizing student-centered with innovative approaches in
engaging active learning.
The findings above also confirm that the students will be more active in
language learning by applying innovative teachings. In addition, some innovative
approach activities can make the students’ participation in the class more dominant
than the tutors. The students are more creative and collaborative with their peers.
As a result, they felt motivated and inspired to learn a foreign language, and the
learning outcomes were achieved. Through this research, the tutors should apply
innovative teachings during teaching and learning to empower language learners.
