Student’s Perception on The Use of Group Work Method in Learning Speaking at The Eleventh Class of MA Thariqat Shufiyah Palengaan Pamekasan

Speaking is known as one of the four basic English skills which is very
important for students to master. The use of the method is one of the things that
can determine the success of the teaching and learning process. Currently
learning methods are widely used in teaching speaking, especially using group
work methods. Group work is a method that allows users to be able to practice
speaking a lot and reduce embarrassment in giving their ideas. This makes
students more confident in practicing speaking. the researcher wanted to know
How are Student’s perception on the use of group work method in Learning
Speaking at the Eleventh Class of MA Thariqat Shufiyah Palengaan Pamekasan ?
and What are the advantages and disvantage of the use of group work method in
Learning Speaking at the Eleventh Class of MA Thariqat Shufiyah Palengaan
Pamekasan?. This study has two research objectives; 1) describe students'
perception on the use of group work method in learning speaking at the eleventh
class of MA Thariqat Shufiyah Palengaan Pamekasan, 2) describe the advantages
and disadvantages on the use of group work method in learning speaking at the
eleventh class of MA Thariqat Shufiyah Palengaan Pamekasan.
The researcher uses a qualitative approach where descriptive is the type of
this research. Researchers obtained data from documentation and direct
interviews. The research informant of this study at eleventh class of MA Thariqat
Shufiyah Palengaan Pamekasan.
The results showed that students gave positive and negative perceptions of
the use of the group work method in listening learning. On the other hand, there
are several advantages and disadvantages of group work in teaching speaking.
The advantages of group work are the delivery of learning material by being in
several groups, attracting and motivating students to take part in learning,
impacting speaking skills, providing their own ideas and being able to practice
more speaking skills in learning. Conversely, what shows the weakness of the
group work method is the lack of respect for fellow friends, sometimes it is done
by the smartest students, and also because of the lack of attention or supervision
from the teacher. In conclusion, the use of the group work method in teaching
speaking has advantages and disadvantages, also related to student perceptions.
Student perceptions also have positive and negative perceptions.
