“Bird Box” a film that originated in the United States with the postapocalyptic genre, talks about where humanity is attacked by a strange symptom
that causes them to want to commit suicide. The arrival of this strange phenomenon
was accompanied by the appearance of an invisible creature whose arrival was
preceded by a strange wind. In this film, there are several semiotic signs shown on
the film.
The research focus of this research is on what kind of semiotic signs is
shown on the Bird Box film using Thomas Albert Sebeok's semiotic theory? And
how are semiotic signs implied on the Bird Box film using Thomas Albert Sebeok's
semiotic theory? The purpose of this research was to identify the kind of semiotic
sign shown on the Bird Box film using Thomas Albert Sebeok's semiotic theory
and to analyze semiotic signs implied on the Bird Box film Thomas Albert Sebeok's
semiotic theory.
In this research, the researcher uses a qualitative descriptive approach, and
the type of research used is library research. The researcher uses two instruments
in collecting the data; observation and documentation. For analyzing the data, the
researcher uses content analysis, which stage of content analysis taken by
researchers is coding. Then the researcher uses triangulation of the data source in
checking the validity of the data.
The result of this research, the researcher found six types of signs
(symptoms, signals, icons, indexes, symbols, and names). There are seven
symptom signs, seven signals, seven iconic signs, nineteen index signs, one symbol
sign, and twenty-one name signs found in the movie Bird Box. To explain the
implied meaning, the role of context is crucial. In Bird Box, the term signs can refer
to anything that is used to communicate meaning. There is a wide variety of ways
we as humans communicate meaning with each other, such as words, images,
colors, symbols, gestures, sounds, and fashion. The meaning of signs can differ
depending on the social situation and the cultural context.
Films are generally built with multiple signs. The important thing in a
semiotic system in the film is the signs that describe something. The signs used in
the film give a message to the audience, and each signal received will be different.
The mother figure plays a very important role. Mothers can direct, determine, and
protect their children. A mother can also convey feelings of guard, and comfort,
and become a place to lean on for her children
