The Analysis of Metaphor on The Pamungka’s English Songs
Key Word: Metaphor, Meaning and Song.
Metaphor is the use of language that has a meaning that is not true and is
described based on similarities or comparisons without using the word
comparison. Metaphor is a part of figurative language whose use is often found in
literary works such as song lyrics. The purpose of this study is to find the type of
metaphor used in the English song from Pamungkas and to explain the concept of
meaning contained in the song.
Library research is used in this research with an objective approach. Data were
obtained from 5 Pamungkas’s English songs entitled To The Bone, Walk The Talk,
Flying Solo, Wait A Minute and Sorry analyzed using the theory of metaphorical
concepts from George Lakoff and Mark Johnson.
From the analysis of this study, the researcher found 25 metaphorical data
which were categorized as structural metaphors (4), orietational metaphor (8) and
ontological metaphor (14). Several meaning concepts were also found in this
study which were categorized as primary meanings consisting of (2) literal
meaning, (3) denotative meaning and (5) lexical meaning. Secondary meanings
were found (21) non-literal and connotative meanings, (10) grammatical
meanings. It can be concluded that the use of metaphors in song analysis research
is to have awareness and appreciation of metaphor aspects in everyday language
as well as in educational aspects.
