Students’ Learning Strategies In The Listening Skill At The Seventh Grade In SMPN 2 Pamekasan

When the students learn the second language especially the listening skill,
the students still have some difficulties, they also have difficulties to write and
identify the keywords. Therefore, it is necessary to use learning strategies. To be
able to understand listening easily, students need to know the learning style used,
because it is one of the strategies to help them understand listening. In this case,
the researcher wants to know students’learning strategies in the listening skill at
the seventh grade in SMPN 2 Pamekasan.There are two research focus in this
study. The first, what are types of learning strategies are applied by the students in
listening skill. And second, what are the strengthsand the weakness of the
strategies used by the students in learning listening.
The researcher used qualitative approach where descriptive as the type of
this research. Researcher obtained data from questionnaire, documentation and
interview. The research informant was seventh grade in SMPN 2 Pamekasan.
Based on the result, types of Learning Strategies Used by Students in
Listening Skills used by students consist of Metacognitive Strategies, Cognitive
Strategies and Socio-Affective Strategies.There were 10 students who chose the
metacognitive strategy. There were 16 students who chose the cognitive strategy.
There were 6 students who chose the socio affective strategy.The strengths of
metacognitive strategies are making passive students become active students in
the learning process, students are easier to understand the material and are free to
express opinions, add insight to teachers by using various learning methods, direct
training makes it easier for students in understanding the material, stimulates
students to think critically about a problem.While the Weaknesses of learning
with the approach metacognitive, teachers need readiness in preparing learning,
time management, conditions and situations where the implementation must be
conducive, cannot run well without student motivation. The strengths of cognitive
strategies as follows:The strengths of cognitive strategies as follows: Make it
easier for students to know the meaning of each word conveyed. This cognitive
method is easy to apply. While the Weaknesses: Students will not fully
understand the material given. If only use cognitive methods without other
learning methods, students will have difficulty in practicing activities or materials.
The strengths of socio affective strategies as follows: This strategy focuses on
interacting with other people so that it will be easier to understand. While the
Weaknesses: The attitudes of students as a result of the form of affective learning
strategies often change, even if the environmental situation and conditions do not
support it.
