An Analysis of Pygmalion Effect on Students Learning in “Hichki” Bollywood Movie Based on Robert Rosenthal Perspective

Some people may be able to capture a message in a movie easily, but not a
few who have difficulty, even the people watch the movie by the purpose for
watching and entertainment only. The movie can provide information and educate
and even inspire the viewers. One of them is that we can understand the importance
of giving positive expectations, responses, input and comments to others, which we
recognize as Pygmalion Effect. Pygmalion Effect is where an individual’s
performance is influenced by others’ expectations.
Regarding to the Pygmalion Effect, the researcher analyzed the effects of
this theory in “Hichki” Bollywood Movie and how does Pygmalion Effect can
happened and affect the students learning outcome.
The researcher used qualitative approach with content analysis as the kind
of research. The primary source used was “Hichki” Bollywood Movie to find out
the data needed. While the secondary sources were journals, articles, books, and
theses that related to this research to complete the primary data. In collecting the
data, the researcher used observation and documentation. Familiarizing and
organizing, coding and reducing, as well as interpreting and representing were used
to analyze the data. The researcher analyzed the movie entitled “Hichki” by using
Robert Rosenthal’s Pygmalion theory.
Furthermore, the researcher found 34 data related to Robert Rosenthal’s
Pygmalion theory which consists of positive and negative effect. It means that there
are 20 data of positive effect and 14 data of negative effect that found in the movie.
Pygmalion's theory can be implemented in our lives, as long as we always give
positive expectations to others.
