An Analysis of Slang on Liam Payne’s Album LP1 Based on Connie Eble’s Perspective.

The diversity of language between people is a unique and interesting
phenomenon to be researched. One of the well-known informal language examples
is slang. According to Connie Eble slang is an ever-changing set of colloquial words
and phrases that speakers use to establish or reinforce social identity or
cohesiveness within a group or with a trend or fashion in society at large. Nowadays
slang is also found in various genres of music as a sign that the use of slang in the
world is not something to blame for and no one can stop the spread of slang. The
use of slang in a song adds to the hype and poses a dependency on people who uses
it. There were two objectives of this study. The first is to find out and explain the
kind of word formations of slang are use in the lyrics of Liam Payne’s album LP1
based on Connie Eble perspective and the second is to review how is the use of
slang in the lyric of Liam Payne’s album LP1 based on Connie Eble perspective.
In this research, the researcher is a qualitative approach which is library
research and use content analysis. The whole data being analyzed based on Connie
Eble’s perspective in slang. In collecting the data the researcher used text
observations by analyzing the lyrics of 17 songs to find out kind of word formations
of slang that being used.
The results of this research were the researcher found 9 slang in total in the
lyrics. There are 1 compounding of slang, 4 suffixation of slang, and 1 shortening
of slang that occurred in the lyrics of 17 songs in the album LP1. That slang are also
matched with 6 characteristics of slang that have been described by Connie Eble
they are; slang is ephemeral but not all slang is ephemeral, slang is innovative, slang
is not jargon and slang is largely colloquial, slang is not geographically restricted
vocabulary, slang is not an “improper” grammatical construction and slang is
mostly words or groups of words.
