The effectiveness of sustained silent reading method on students’ reading comprehension at Xth grade of SMAN 3 Pamekasan in academic year 2020/2021.

English as one of the international languages is included in the learning
curriculum in Indonesia. English has four basic skills, namely, writing, reading,
listening and speaking. This study discusses students' reading comprehension.
Reading without understanding the meaning will be a futile activity. This is the
main problem of this study, many students do not understand the text they read, this
may occur because of a lack of reading intensity or students cannot focus on the
text. Therefore, a teacher must apply methods to help students improve their reading
comprehension skills, for example using sustained silent reading method as in this
study.
The researcher formulated the problem of study as follows: 1) do the Xth
grade students have higher achievement on reading comprehension after being
taught sustained silent reading method at SMAN 3 Pamekasan in academic year
2020/2021? 2) how is statistically significance of the effectiveness of sustained
silent reading on students’ reading comprehension at Xth grade of SMAN 3
Pamekasan in academic year 2020/2021.
This study focuses on differences the mean score of students before and after
the use of sustained silent reading method. Therefore, this study uses quantitative
research methods, namely using objective measurements in the form of numbers or
values used to test the hypothesis. This study uses pre-experimental design, the
researcher only has one sample class. The results of data analysis show that tvalue is
higher than ttable (7.37 > 2.045) using a significant level of 5% (df = 29). By looking
at the difference, the use of the silent reading method is declared effective on
students’ reading comprehension at Xth grade of SMAN 3 Pamekasan in academic
year 2020/2021.
