The Study of Students’ Mastery In Adjective Phrase At A class Banyuanyar English Center
Key words: Students’ mastery, English Grammar, Adjective phrase.
Language is a tool of communication and interaction that is only belonged
by human in the world. They use language as media because they need to interact
to each other.Grammar is fundamental to language. Without grammar, language
does not exis because grammar is partly the study of what forms are possible in
the language. Meanwhile not many students like grammar, they think that
grammar is very difficult to learn, so that they get problem in learning grammar.
In this study, the researcher provides two research problems that is What
Problems are faced by students in Mastering Adjective Phrase? And How does the
teacher solve students’ problems in Adjective Phrase? Based on the research
problems, the researcher makes the goals of this study to know the problems faced
by students in adjective phrase and to explain the teacher solves students’
problems in adjective phrase.
In this research, the researcher uses a qualitative approach with descriptive
design. The data was obtained by interviewing the teacher and the students to
know the problems faced by the students. And then, the researcher observes the
students’ activity in the class in order that the researcher can explain how the
teacher solves the problems. Besides that, the researcher uses documentations in
collecting the data.
The result of this research shows that there are many problems which are
faced by the students during teaching learning process such as problem in learning
and problem in mastering adjective phrase. Many students of A class in
Banyuanyar English Center (BEC) have some problems in mastering grammatical
rules especially in adjetive phrase. They can not determine adjective phrase in a
sentence, they can not distinguish adjective whose function is as head word or
modifier and also they can not arrange words correctly. Most of students do not
know how to analyze adjective phrase. They get confused in understanding kinds
of phrases, component of adjective phrase, and it’s functions. The phenomenoun
happened to students of A class because they are a beginer and English is a
foreign language for them. Whereas, grammar is a basic skill to write and speak
English correctly because it correlates with the rules in English language.
From the findings, it can be concluded that mastering adjective phrase is
very important because adjective phrase is one of component in grammar.
Grammar becomes main thing in English language because it is element of four
skills namelly, speaking, writing, reading and listening. Every students have
problem in mastering adjective phrase, but the teacher must be able to solve the
problems by their own ways. So that, it is suggested for students to have more
awareness to grammar because it becomes the main thing in English. And for
teacher, it is suggested to be a creative teacher
