The Effectiveness of U-Shape Seating on Reading Class of Third Semester of English Teaching Learning Program at Iain Madura

Reading is an activity that must take place without any time limit. Reading
can be done anywhere and anytime. U-shape is one of class room arrangement
that all purposes setup. In reading class especially reading comprension the
teacher should be choose appropriate strategy because reading comprehension is
one of reading skill that not easy to do or we can say that not easy to master. One
of the strategy that should be pay attention by the teacher is classroom
arrangemen like U-Shape. By using U-Shape seating students more focus on their
duty because in the U-Shape seating the students do not have change to do another
thing axcept what the teacher ask to do. In U-shape seating the teacher have more
change to focus and pay attention to what the students do.
The objective of the research is to describe and analyze the effectiveness
of U-Shape seating in reading class or not. The method used in this research was
Experimental method which is focus on pre-experimental research design with
one group pre-test and post-test design. The instruments used in this research are
test and documentation. The population of the study consisted of four classes and
the sample used is the clustered random sampling. Therefore, the sample is one
class at the third semester of English education program. The total number of the
sample is 21 students. The students were given tw o tests, pre-test given before the
students got treatment and post-test given after the students got the treatment to
know the different achievement of the students.
After getting the data of tests, the writer analyzed the data using the
independent t test formula to test the hypothesis and to find the mean difference of
students’ reading comprehension before and after being taught by using U-Shape
strategy. It was found that the value is 4,53, while the t-table is 2,07 (level of
significance 5% df=21); (4,53> 2.07). By looking at the difference, it shows that
there is significant different of students reading comprehension before and after
being taught by using U-Shape strategy at the third semester of English Teaching
Learning Program in IAIN Madura. The result of this research that the alternative
hypothesis (Ha) stated that there is significant difference of students reading
comprehension before and after being taught by using U-Shape seating strategy at
the third semester of Teaching Learning Program in IAIN Madura.
