THE INFLUENCE OF HANDPUPPET MEDIA IN STORYTELLING ON SPEAKING SKIL AT EIGHTH GRADE OF SMP MA'ARIF 2 PAMEKASAN

In studying English, there are four skills that must be mastered namely
speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Speaking is one of important ways that
students have to study in English to communicate and to deliver information to
other people by orally. One of the way increase their speaking is by practice and
to speak fluently, especially in an organization or institution or even in class the
students also the teacher need a media to help them for deliver the material by
using media, especially handpuppet.
The objective of the research was to find out the effectiveness of
handpuppet on students’ speaking skill especially on narrative text at the Eighth
grade of SMP Ma’arif 2 Pamekasan. The students’ populations of Eighth grade
at SMP Ma’arif 2 Pamekasan are 41 students, and the samples are 41 students
(19 students for experiment class and 22 students for controlled class).
The sampling technique that was used by the writer was convenience
sampling. The method that used by the writer in the research was quasy
experimental method which divided two different classes. The classes were
designed as experiment class and control class. Experiment class was given by
treatment by the teacher, and control class without treatment. Experiment class
was taught used handpuppet as the media and the controlled class was taught
without it. Moreover, this research was conducted through the following
procedures: giving pre-test, applying treatments in experimental class only, and
giving post-test.
The data analyzed in this research was gathered through speaking test
which assessed used speaking rubric. The data analyzed by statistic formula of
T-test. The result that was gained from the research proved the difference
between students’ score in learning speaking skill by Convenience sampling
technique using pre-tes, treatment and then pot-test.
According to the statistical calculation result, to = 8,43 and with df 40 in
5% significance level ttable = 2,02. it means that t0>t-table. So, the Hypothesis
lternative is accepted. In conclude, the handpuppet as a media is effective onvi
students speaking skill in story telling at Eighth grade of SMP Ma’arif 2
Pamekasan.
