EXPLORING STUDENTS' STRATEGIES IN MEMORIZING VOCABULARY AT BBC [BATA-BATA BILINGUAL CENTRE] PP. MAMBAUL ULUM BATA-BATA 2019-2020 ACADEMIC YEAR

Vocabulary knowledge plays an important role in learning English as a
Second Language (ESL). It shows the importance of vocabulary in expressing
thoughts and conveying meanings and it can also be an indicator that
communication will poorly be understood without a large number of words.
Language learners should be taught vocabulary learning strategies in order to be
able to determine the meaning of new words and memorize them. Learning
becomes more efficient and effective by the use of strategies and learners become
more proficient when they use strategies. Besides, if learners tend to acquire the
vocabulary, they need a good knowledge of vocabulary learning strategies.
The study was aimed at exploring the students’ strategies in memorizing
vocabulary and the strength of those vocabulary that used by students in
memorizing vocabulary at BBC PP. Mambaul Ulum Bata Bata. The study used
qualitative research as approach and descriptive research as kind of research. The
subject of this research is students of Bata Bata Bilingual Centre (BBC) while the
object of this research is the students’ strategies in memorizing vocabulary. The
researcher used interview and documentation to collect the data about the students’
strategies in memorizing vocabulary.
From the finding, the researcher found three strategies used by the students
of Bata Bata Bilingual Centre, there are; repeating strategy. Repeating strategy is
one of the most strategy used by the students of Bata Bata Centre. This strategy has
been proven successfully, it can be seen from the students score that is significant,
they can submit more than fifty words in a night. Beside repeating strategy, reading
strategy also become a good strategy for the students when they want to memorize
vocabulary. This strategy is very significant observed from the amount of
vocabularies submitted by the students. The last strategy that commonly they use is
practicing strategy. Practicing strategy is one of the strategy used by a few of
students in Bata Bata Bilingual Centre. By practicing the words will always stick
in them memorize, some practice using new words as they talk to themselves in
order to commit them to long-term memory.
There are four strengths from three different strategies that used by the
students of Bata Bata Bilingual Centre in memorizing vocabularies, there are; can
improve the ability to speak and read text in English, able to memorize vocabularies
quickly, make them easier to remember the vocabularies, and able to develop the
vocabularies and able to applicate it easily.
In conclusion, the students feel that the strategies they use are very useful
and help them to memorize vocabulary easily.
