Communication is the process of delivering information in the form of
messages or ideas. And to communicate, the speaker must speak or speak.
Speaking is one of the tools for communication that people use in their daily
activities, and can express our thoughts and feelings with spoken English. In the
speaking there are several components that must be discussed, one of which is
intonation. Intonation is a melodic utterance. This means that the meaning of the
sentence can depend on the intonation of the sentence. In general there are two
types of intonation, namely falling intonation and rising intonation.
Students who majored in English (TBI) exactly A class fifth semester who
use English learning and try to speak like native speakers have problems in
intonation of speech, especially intonation in sentences in the form of a question
sentence.
The researcher formulated two questions (1) How is the question intonation error
on speaking production of students TBI-A fifth semester through praat system ?
(2) What are the factors that cause of question intonation error on speaking
production of students TBI-A fifth semester through praat system ?
Researchers used descriptive qualitative research to conduct research with
tree data collection techniques: observation, interviews and documentation.
Researchers analyze data obtained from observations, interviews and
documentation. Then the researcher displays or classifies the data using the praat
system. After that the researchers proceed by examining the data to get data
validity.
Intonation errors include: (a) wrong pitch where it occurs in the Question
sentence in the form of w-h questions, should in w-h the intonation questions used
are falling intonations but they use up intonation. (b) no pitch pitch occurs in
sentences in the form of yes / no questions, it should be in yes / no questions that
are used are up intonation but they use the same intimation with the intonation wh question that is intonation down. Therefore students in semester 5 of the TBI
IAIN Madura experienced errors in intonation asking questions such as, (1) lack
of knowledge about intonation. They say the sentence Tanya without thinking
about what intonation they use when speaking, (2) Students also speak depending
on the conditions they feel, so that when they speak the intonation that they use is
wrong for example the intonation that should ask turns into an intonation
statement because they are not focused in speaking .
It is recommended that English learners must better understand and learn
how to use the right intonation in communication. So students will have
something in common with native speakers.
