THE ANALISYS OF DEIXIS IN STUDENTS' WRITING OF RECOUNT TEXT BY USING PERSONAL LETTER AT THE ELEVENTH GRADE IN SMAN 04 PAMEKASAN

Keyword: recount text, personal letter, deixis and meaning
Language is used to express the ideas and feeling either in oral or
written form. The students expressed their thought and feeling about their
past personal experiences by using personal letter. Sharing experience can
be written by using personal letter. Personal letter is a media of written form
used to strengthen the friendship between one individual to another person
and also to retell past experience about holiday. Retell about past holiday is
included to the recount text. Recount text is a text to retell past experience,
so the researcher used deixis to analyze the students’ writing of recount by
using personal letter. The personal letter is about students’ past experiences
about holiday
There are two research focuses in this study. The first, what types of
deixis used in students’ writing of recount text by using personal letter at the
eleventh grade in SMAN 04 Pamekasan. The second, what are the meaning
of deixis used in students’ writing of recount text by using personal letter at
the eleventh grade in SMAN 04 Pamekasan.
This research used qualitative approach and descriptive research as
kind of research. This research used three types of data collection;
documentation, observation and interview. The data was taken from students’
writing of recount text by using personal letter to analyze. Then the data
would be analyzed using deixis based on George Yule’s theory.
The result of this research, the researcher found three types of deixis
used by students such as; person deixis, spatial deixis and temporal deixis.
Person deixis is divided into three types; first person deixis, second person
deixis and third person deixis. First person deixis ‘I’ is mostly used by
students in their writing because all of writing of recount text in form of
person letter about holiday tell about the writer itself. Spatial deixis is
indicating the location of the writers of recount text about the past
experiences related to the holiday. The locative ‘here’ (proximal) and ‘there
(distal) found in students’ writing of recount text in form of personal letter.
The mostly used of spatial deixis in students’ writing of recount text by using
personal letter is ‘there’ which included to the distal term. Temporal deixis is
used to point to a time of event when the moment or event happened such as
last week, two weeks ago, five months ago, a year ago and two years ago.
The most only used in spatial deixis is ‘last week’.
Based on the result above, it is suggested for students to know about thei m p ortan t of stu d yi n g th e d ei xi s an d i t i s exp ected to th e En g l i sh teach er or

digunakan untuk menunjuk waktu dari kejadian yang terjadi meliputi;
seminggu yang lalu, dua minggu yang lalu, lima bulan yang lalu,satu tahun
yang lalu dan dua tahun yang lalu. Yang paling banyak digunakan siswa
adalah ‘seminggu yang lalu’.
Berdasarkan dari hasil diatas, disarankan kepada siswa untuk mengerti
pentingnya belajar deixis dan diharapkan bagi guru bahasa ingris atau
dosen mengajari siswa tentang deixis jadi siswa akan mengerti dan tahu
tentang deixis.
