THE CORRELATION BETWEEEN METACOGNITIVE STRATEGY AND SPEAKING SKILL AT 8TH GRADE OF MTsN 2 PAMEKASAN

Speaking is one of the important point to communicate and express our ideas, we are able to communicate each other with anyone. It cause of the function of language. English speaking is really needed to communicate well because the researcher conscious that English is international language and it should mastering by student in English department in teaching learning process. There are many ways to improve their speaking skills by practicing with their friend or used one of strategy when their study such as metacognitive strategy. Metacognitive is thinking about thinking, it is mean that student use their thinking to choose learning style and strategies that dealing with student themselves Based on the explanation the researcher has purpose to know correlation between metacognitive strategy and speaking skill and to know how far the contribution of metacognitive strategy to speaking skill at 8th grade of MTsN 2 Pamekasan. This research use quantitative approach. Source of the data get by test and questionnaire, the researcher used cluster technique and sample 38 student at 8th grade of MTsN 2 Pamekasan. Data analysis method used simple analysis linear regression and also used hypothesis-test, F-test, and determination square (R2). The result of the research showed that simple analysis linear regression Y = 65.009 + 0.321X. (a) The result T-test showed that value is Ttest > Ttable (3.899 > 2.028) with the significant value 0.000 < 0.05, so, the result stated that metacognitive variable (X) has positive contribution and significant to speaking skill variable (Y) at 8th grade of MTsN 2 Pamekasan (Ha is accepted). (b) The result of determination square (R2) is 0.277 or 27.7% it is mean that the independent variable (metacognitive strategy) is able to explain the dependent variable (speaking skill) of 27.7%. While the rest (100%27.7% = 72.3%) is explained by other variable not include in this research (not examined).
