STUDENTS’ CONFIDENCE IN DECIDING POSITION IN PERFORMING A SPEAKING ACTIVITY IN THE THIRD SEMESTER AT IAIN MADURA

Speaking is habitual activity of every human that producing interaction or
communication everyday with other people. Speaking class needs careful
management to choose which treatment that appropriate to improve the students
speaking skill based on the class situation. In speaking class especially for the
third semester at IAIN MADURA, the teacher manages the classroom by let the
students to decide the way they would perform their speaking performance
whether standing or sitting position in which they are confidence to deliver it. To
explore the research, the researcher formulate two questions; 1. How does the
students deciding position in performing a speaking activity in the third semester
at IAIN Madura? 2. How does the students’ confidence in performing a speaking
activity in the third semester at IAIN Madura?
This research is descriptive qualitative research that has aims to find out the
student’s confidence by investigate student in deciding position in performing
speaking activity. The researcher is the key instrument to collect the data by takes
a position to be non- participant. The research focuses on the third semester
because they have speaking class and consider to be more expert the lower
semester. The data are taken by non participant observation, semi structured
interview and documentation. Then it will be analyzed by data reduction, data
display and verification. To validate the data, the researcher use triangulation data
source and techniques.
Based on the results of the data exposure in the discussion points, the
students mostly chose standing than sitting position when they speak. Students
who choose the sitting position tend to be passive unlike students who choose the
standing position, those who choose the standing position look more active and
relaxed when they speak in front of the class. The students' decision to stand in
performing their speaking skill influences their confidence. Those who stand in
performing speaking show more confident. They feel more confidence and relax
because they can explore their vocabulary to speak in front of their friend freely.
It is suggested that the teacher should know the position that is appropriate
with the student especially in speaking. For the students, are to choose variants of
position that is easy to deliver their idea. The students also should spend some
more time to practice in front of public to be more confident in delivering the
speaking activities.
