Conversation analysis is studied in pragmatics. In our daily life, we always make some conversation with others in a variety of social context, it can be face to face exchanges, such as talk at home between the family; non face to face exchanges, such as telephone conversation; and broadcast materials such as a live radio phone-in or a television chat show, talk show and newscast. When people are having a conversation, they should understand about the strategy or the mechanism of conversation itself in order to make the conversation run well and smoothly. Conversation has a good organization if turn taking rule are obeyed, but sometimes the rules of conversation are not obeyed by participants. So it can make some violations in turn taking. Such another conversation, turn taking is also occur in the conversation of newscast program. Therefore, newscast program of The Lead with Jake Tapper on CNN episode 1 August 2018 is taken as the object of this study.
There are two research focuses in this study. The first, the researcher wants to know kind of turn taking that mostly used in conversation on newscast program of The Lead with Jake Tapper on CNN episode 1 August 2018 based on Jacob L. Mey perspective. And the second, the researcher wants to analyze how the mechanism of turn taking occur in conversation on newscast program of The Lead with Jake Tapper on CNN episode 1 August 2018 based on Jacob L. Mey perspective.
In this research, qualitative approach is used. Kind of this research use content analysis because this research will focus mainly on analysis the mechanism of turn taking which occur in conversation on newscast program of The Lead with Jake Tapper on CNN episode 1 August 2018 based on Jacob L. Mey perspective. To get the data, researcher does documentation from YouTube and transcription.
The result of this research shows that there are 48 data which categorized as turn taking mechanism. All of data are divided into three type based on Jacob L. Mey perspective, they are taking the floor (starting up (2 data), taking over (4 data), interruption (14 data), and overlaps (11 data)), holding the floor (3 data), and yielding the floor (14 data).
The conclusion of this research is that the kind of turn taking that mostly used in conversation on newscast program of The Lead with Jake Tapper on CNN episode 1 August 2018 based on Jacob L. Mey perspective are taking the floor (interruption) and yielding the floor.
