THE EFFECT OF DIGITAL STORYTELLING ON STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION OF ELEVENTH GRADE AT MA DARUL IHSAN SUMENEP

Reading is one of language skills which need to be mastered by students. It is the receptive written language skill where a reader or a group of reader interprets information transferred by a writer. Thus, reading is the most important skill to master in order to ensure success not only in learning English, but also in learning any content class where reading is required. Reading comprehension means the process of constructing meaning by coordinating a number of complex processes that include word reading, word and world knowledge, and fluency.Media is another factor which can influence the level of comprehensibility of a text. Therefore, digital storytelling as media isused to make the researcher and other people sure that it can affect students’ reading comprehension.
This research composes two problems of study. The first is do the eleventh grade students have better reading comprehension after taught using digital storytelling than those before taught using non digital storytelling at MA DarulIhsanSumenep?. Then the second is Howsignificancestatistically the effect of digital storytelling on students’ reading comprehension of eleventhgrade at MA DarulIhsanSumenep?. This research was mainly aimed to measure whether yes or not the use of digital storytelling affects students’ reading comprehension.
This research is quantitative approach where the research design is using pre experimental research design. There are two variables in this study; they are digital storytelling as independent variable, and reading comprehension of eleventh grade students at MA DarulIhsanSumenep as dependent variable. Target population of this research is 20 students at eleventh grade. Therefore, the technique sample which the researcher used is population sample. The research instruments which used in this study are reading comprehension test and documentations. The obtained data from reading comprehension test then analyzed using dependent t-test formula.
The result of this research shows that there is a significant effect of digital storytelling on students’ reading comprehension of eleventh grade at MA DarulIhsanSumenep. It is proved by the enhancement on their score of reading test in pretest and posttest. Next, the statistical analysis result indicates that t value (2,79) is higher than t table (2,09) in 5% significant level.
Based on the result above, it is expected to suggest English teachers to help students increase reading comprehension by providing this digital storytelling as media to help them in comprehending of English text.
