ANALYSIS OF PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTION ON DIPHTHONG IN JOKOWIDODO’S APEC CEO SUMMIT 2014 PROGRAM SPEECH AT BEIJING CHINA

Linguistics has many branches. One of them is Phonology. It belongs to sounds learning. In order to understand the way of pronouncing word, there has been phonetic transcription. In this research, Joko Widodo’s diphthong pronunciation would be analyzed in IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) compared with Oxford Dictionary. This research focuses on analyzing the number of diphthong, kind of diphthong, and diphthong errors which were pronounced by Joko Widodo in the forum of APEC CEO Summit 2014 in Beijing, China.
There are three research focuses in this study. The first, to know the whole diphthong inside of Joko Widodo’s speech in the forum of APEC CEO Summit 2014 in Beijing, China. The Second, to know kinds of diphthong which appears in Joko Widodo’s speech in the forum of APEC CEO Summit 2014 in Beijing, China. And the third, to know diphthong error which were pronounced by Joko Widodo’s speech in the forum of APEC CEO Summit 2014 in Beijing, China.
In this research, qualitative approach is used. Kind of research uses descriptive research, because this research describes the way Joko Widodo pronounced diphthong in the forum of APEC CEO Summit 2014 in Beijing, China.
The result of this research shows that there are 193 diphthongs on that speech. The biggest number of appropriate kind of diphthong is /aɪ/ with 58 right pronunciations. The biggest number of diphthong error is /əʊ/ with 43 errors. The whole diphthong errors are 72 pronunciations. The reason why Joko Widodo was difficult to pronounce diphthong /əʊ/ is because there is no diphthong ended with /ʊ/ in Javanese. The reason why Joko Widodo is so easy to pronounce diphthong /aɪ/ is because there is a diphthong ended with /ɪ/ in Javanese.
The conclusion of this research is that Joko Widodo is not a native English speaker, so that he could not pronounce English as well as native speaker especially in diphthong. He could not speak certain English diphthong because there is no the same diphthong in his own first language and he could speak certain English diphthong because there is the same diphthong in his own first language, Javanese.
