THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SPELLING BEE GAME TO IMPROVE THE FIFTH GRADERS’ SPELLING ABILITY ON WRITING ACTIVITY AT SDN TOBUNGAN 2 GALIS PAMEKASAN

Based on the result of preliminary study show that fifth graders’ writing ability in spelling aspect at SDN Tobungan 2 unsatisfied. Most of them were not aware of the use of correct spelling on writing activity. As the result, the students often make a spelling mistake when the teacher gave writing assignment, whereas spelling mistake irk their writing. Thus, researcher suggest the spelling bee game as the alternative game to improve students’ spelling ability.
This study use classroom action research (CAR) that consist of two cycles. Each cycle consist of four step, they are planning, action, observation, and reflection. The spelling bee game played individually. Before the study started, the researcher an also as a teacher gave an assignment on writing activity that the result 18% passed and 82% failed. It’s means that the fifth graders’ spelling ability still low because the researcher have the target of percentage 50%. So, researcher conduct the study used spelling bee game.
In the first cycle the result were 26% passed and 74% failed. It is not reached the target, so the researcher did the second cycle. The results of the second cycle were 52% passed and 48% failed. In the second cycle, students reached the target and it’s successful enough. So, the researcher did not redo the cycle.
Based on the result of research, the average of students’ score in cycle 2 was increase 10 point than cycle 1. If in cycle 1 the average of students’ score was 59, 5 point but in cycle 2 was 66, 5 point. It was successful enough because the student that get score more than 70 were 12 students and it’s suitable with expectation of researcher that is 50% (11/12) of students passed the test. In this meeting some of student understand well the material, instruction, and listen well the teacher. Maybe the students still remember the rules of game in the previous meeting. But a little of students do not pay attention to the teacher’s explanation. Because, there is an improvement of their ability, so the researcher just doing 2 cycle.
There were many factors that influenced the result of study. One of the factors was teaching aid or method used in teaching learning process. If the teacher used interesting method or media in teaching learning process, it would make the students enthusiast and enjoy the lesson more.
In conclusion, the implementation of Spelling Bee game can be used to improve the fifth graders’ spelling ability at SDN Tobungan 2 Galis Pamekasan. Therefore, it is suggested to the English teachers to implement the Spelling Bee game in teaching and learning process. The further researchers are also suggested to conduct similar studies by using Spelling Bee game in other skills, such as speaking, listening, and reading.
