The Study of Formulating Thesis Statement Difficulties in Writing an Essay of the Fifth semester Student at English Department STAIN Pamekasan

Writing is one of sender idea from the writer in writing, not everyone can write rightly so that some writer needed process to do it, to make good and correct writing, the writer should have good language, sensitivity to give ideas in writing, and also have arts about word, phrase, sentence, paragraph and essay. Writing essay is one of language skill that difficult, if correlated with others, writing an essay must have concept of capacious to express some idea. So that the reader can understand what the writer mind, especially in writing thesis statement, because is needed in writing essay, if the thesis statement is not clear so that the essay cannot continue rightly.
There are two research problems of this research. Firstly, what are the students’ difficulties to make thesis statement, secondly the causing factor of difficulties in formulating thesis statement in fifth semester in D class of English Teaching Learning Program?
This study is a descriptive research using a qualitative approach, the researcher used Triangulation for validity of the data, and focus on the fifth semester in 2017-2018 in D class of English Teaching Learning Program, on this class there are 32 students, by using documentation and interview as a data collection.
Based on tool the research the students’ of fifth semester in D class of English department, some of them got some difficulties to make good thesis statement in writing an essay, among of the difficulties they are difficult to write the thesis statement, the placement of thesis statement, did not list subdivision, the thesis statement unspecific and pattern of organization (chronological order, logical division, comparison/contras). Those difficulties are caused by many factors such as: because they make too general the thesis statement, less vocabulary, less reading.
Based on this research, the researcher can give some suggestion. For students’, the students should have high motivation to learn about writing thesis statement, to increase their ability about writing. The suggestion for the researcher, the researcher more understand to make good thesis statement to become as add reference to next researcher, the suggestion to lecher, as a lecher must know the students difficulties in writing thesis statement by using approach.
