English language is one of international language with a biggest user untill now. A good skill in English language considered as one of progresiveness criteria in among our society. Thus, able to use English well considered as one with more special skill. Even, English language be an oblgated course in Indonesian educational curriculum. This condition also become a concern of Psantren as a religious educational institution in Indonesia. Pesantren also use English language as an obligated language beside Arabic language, than it called as a “Modern Pesantren” just like Al-Amien Prenduan Islamic Boarding School Sumenep. This condition interested to be research, how do Madurese students (santri) acquiring English language, because this islamic boarding school is located in Madura Island.
Besides, it is interesting t be how do Madurese students maintain their Madurese language existance while they are obligated to use English language. As we have known that Madurese language is in shifted condition by Indonesian language which is actually this language is a unity language, but in fact this language became such a life style. We can see that from the penomenon that new family in Madura tend to use and teaches their childrent to use Indonesian language that Madurese language.
This research uses Qualitative Approach designe by Descriptive Research Design. Observation and Interview are choosen to be a main instrument, and documentation as a suppirting instrument. The researcher directly observing students activities in Al-Amen islamic boarding school related with language activity they do. For interview, researcher uses semi structured interview by asking prepared questionts based on the students situation. Besides, researcher uses documentation by collecting pictures, recording, interview transcription, and some document related with this islamic boardig school.
From the result of research, researcher found how students acquiring English language. Students acquiring English language through invironment built up by this islamic boarding school. Al-Amien obligated whole students to use English and Arabic language in students daily activities, and they will get a punishment if broke that role, thus they have to use those obligated languages. By that rule created an environtment that help students easy to learn and practice English language. This islamic boarding school also provided supporting activities to increase students language ability. By this condition will increase students desire to mastering English , thus they can learn and practice their English language more.
In maintaining Madurese languae, actually there is no awareness from students to maintain their Madurese language. Students still using Madurese language in some condition among Al-Amien Prenduan Boarding School. They use Madurese out of boarding house control. Beside they use Madurese at home when they are having holiday, they also use it around islamic boarding school. They use it when they can’t express their idea and what they want to say by using English or Arabic language, such as when they are playing football, gathering with their friends, when they are angry, taking a bath and also having eat. They did it hidden.
The last, researcher suggest Modern Islamic Boarding House as educational institution that provide a generation for this country which is reach by culture to participate in introducing each part of Indonesian heritage culture especialy in language from whole this country. In addition, because this research is not the perfect one, thus the researcher suggests further research to observe about the same topic by different approach.
