In the communication we need some politeness strategy when we can use in the conversation to avoid the face act. There are politeness strategy, it is bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, off record and no FTA. The researcher use Riders to the Sea in John Millington Synge drama to analyze it. the researcher research the utterance main character is Cathleen who is the daughter which it involved with the politeness strategy.
The focus of this study is what are politeness strategies used by Main Character in Riders to the Sea Drama by John Millington Synge, how to analyze of thepoliteness strategies are used by Main Character in Riders to the Sea by John Millington Synge. Even the research objective is to know politeness strategies are used by Main Characterin Riders to the Sea Drama by John Millington Synge, to analyze politeness strategies are used by Main Characterin Riders to the Sea Drama by John Millington Synge.
The approach of this study is library research and the type of research is expressive approach which the writer tell about the people of Island habit which do with the people on Aran Island. The data is taken part of utterance of the main character is Cathleen. This data source is primary which is the drama its self, Riders to the Sea focus on Cathleen as main character and the secondary source which dialogue transcript the drama of Riders to the Sea, politeness strategy book, internet, essay, etc. The data is using descriptive text which analysis the drama while data analysis use data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing of verification. This study use checking of data validity which choose analysis triangulation.
The result of the analysis are the politeness strategy used by main character in Riders to the Sea. It is bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, off record and no FTA. Bald on record is the speaker say without hint, positive politeness is the speaker say what the speaker want to speak, negative politeness is the speaker say with using question or apologize form, off record is the speaker use with hint and no FTA is the speaker perform or not face act.
The conclusion is the main character majority use bald on record, positive politeness and negative politeness while minority use off record and no FTA in this drama, Riders to the Sea.
