THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ENGLISH SHORT STORIES AS MEDIA AND STUDENT READING COMPREHENSION AT 5th GRADE OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PADEMAWU TIMUR 4

Short story is a short work of fiction. Short story is a compact literary genre in which much is left unsaid in order for the reader to make implications. So short story is kind of fiction that contain a narrative text and picture to support the story more interesting. And the reader will like to read.
There is two problem statements in this research. The first is there any relationship between English Short Stories as media and student Reading comprehension the 5th grade of Elementary school of Pademawu Timur 4. The second how significant is the relationship betweenEnglish Short Stories as media andstudent Reading comprehension at the 5th grade of Elementary school of Pademawu Timur 4
In this case the research uses quantitative approach by using correlation design. The population is at fifth grade students of science class in SDN pademawu timur 4, which contains of 15 students. The researcher uses instruments observation checklist and test of gathering data and uses product moment’s pattern to analyse the data.
The result of this study is there is correlation between English short story as media and student reading comprehension. The students gives short story as media have good result after it is compared English short story and student reading comprehension. It is also proven by comparing the r value (0,874) to r table (0,514) in 5% significant level with degree of freedom is 15 In which the null alternative hypothesis in this research is accepted.
Based on the result above, the researcher suggested for SDN pademawu timur 4 implement English short story and should give more facilities. Suggestion for the teachers should have high motivation to the students who cannot interest and lack of confident to reading up English. Suggestion for the students must be serious and pay more attentions during English teaching learning activities especially on English reading. And for the future researcher which the result of the research can be used as a reference in conducting a research which related to the English short story to achieve students’ English reading by using different research design.
