In most language classroom, mastering speaking skill is necessary for all students. Many students take success in speaking skill as the main priority in learning a foreign language, because mastering speaking skill is a measurement whether they have mastered the other skills. However, it is not a simple case. The fact shows that there are some students still have difficulties in speaking skill. There are many factors that influence the successful in speaking skill and or in academic achievement. One of them is learning style and psychological types. Learning style is the preferred way of learning or studying. All students have different preferred way in studying. They will apply their own way and style to study the course they have. For instance, some students like more to study in group and they will not stand for long time in their study if they learn alone. They look for friends to study together. On the contrary, some students like more to study alone. They will endure in their study if they are alone.
Based on explanation above learning style is individual’s preferred ways of going about learning. Where, the one’s learning style will result from personality variables, including psychological, socio-cultural background, and education experience. That’s why the personality or psychological of someone also influences one’s learning style. There are eight types of psychological and two of them are extroverted and introverted. Students who have these two psychological are like two sides of a coin, students who have strongly extroverted psychological are fluent in speech, free from worries, flexible and adapteble, but students who are introverted are more reserved and usually shy to speak in the middle of people, like to listen to others talk and think about information privately and also like to listen, observe, write, and read.
The phenomena above inspired the researcher to execute a comparative study in STAIN Pamekasan, a study that is mainly purposed to investigate whether there is significant difference between extroverted students and introverted students on their English speaking skill.
This study use quantitative approach which is designed namely ex-post facto or causal comparative. The population is 195 students of all third semester students of English Teaching Learning Program of STAIN Pamekasan and the sample of 40 students (20 extroverted students and 20 introverted students) are taken away randomly by using simple random sampling technique. Two kinds of research instruments are utilized to obtain the data. They are questionnaire, and test. The questionnaire is spread out to identify whether the students included category of extroverted students or introverted students, and test is used to know the result of English speaking skill in both groups that is used as primary data. The data are analyzed by using formula independent t-test.
The research result reveals that there is significant difference between extroverted students and introverted students at the third semester of English Teaching Learning Program of STAIN Pamekasan on their English speaking skill. It is shown in data analysis t-value of 2.749 is significantly higher than t-table on the significant level 5% that is only 2.02. ( > ; 2.749 > 2.02; Level of significance 5%, df = 40). Extroverted students are more active on English speaking skill because they have special characteristics, such as fluent in speech, free from worries, flexible and adaptable, talk to understand information and ideas.
The finding above also confirms that different psychological types (Personality) of the students give the difference effect to the students’ learning achievement. Therefore, very recommended to the English teachers or lecturers to be aware of the various students’ psychological types (Personality) in order they can develop the student’s ability in learning maximally. As the result, they can learn and truly understand what you are teaching.
