THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE FIRST SEMESTER STUDENTS' SELF CONFIDENCE AND THEIR SPEAKING FLUENCY AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF UNIVERSITY OF MlJHAMMADIY AH MALANG IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2015/2016

The language skill is the performance of speakers of a language in using their language as a tool of communication in their daily rutines. Self confidence has the significance role for the people to speak fluently. The problem of study : Do the first semester students who have better self confidence also have better speaking fluency at Engl.ish department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang in the academic year 2015/2016 while the objective of study to find out whether the first semester students who have better self confidence also have a better speaking fluency at English department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang in the academic year 2015/20 I 6.
This research uses quantitative research design where the data is analyzed using statistical procedures. This research is correlation research which involves variable X as independent variable (students· self confidence) and variable Y as dependent variable (students' speaking fluency). The population of this research is the students in speaking class at the first semester at English department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang in academic year 2015/2016, including A, B, C, D, and E class. The sample of this research is 25 students by using simple random sampling. The research instruments are questionnaire used to get students' self confidence score (variable X) and documentation used to get students' speaking fluency score (variable Y). The researcher also gets that the questionnaire used has been valid and reliable. Those are proved that the researcher uses content related validity evidence and reliability value is higher than r table. The researcher gets the documentation from the speaking lecture.
The result of this research is that there is high/stron g correlation between variable X (independent variable) and variable Y (dependent variable). Jt is proved by the result of the correlation value that is 0.759 and it is higher than r table in 5% significance.
Based on the result of the research, it can be coqcluded that there is correlation between the first semester students' self confidence and their speaking fluency at English department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang in academic year 20I 5/2016 . The researcher also proposes some suggestions to some educational elements such as institution, lecturer, students, and also to the future researchers.
