THE INFLUENCE OF WORD FORMATION UNDERSTANDING IN DEVELOPING WRITING SKILL AT FIFTH SEMESTER STUDENTS IN STAIN PAMEKASAN

One of the ways to communicate is through writing besides speaking. Because by using writing, students can share their ide, opinion and thought in writing form. Writing is also provided in the school to the students and of course in writing needs word formation because knowing of meaning from a word and how it create is important. In other word to give good structure or arrange from the writer. There are two problems of study, those are: Is the better the word formation understanding of fifth semester students in STAIN Pamekasan the better their writing skill and how significance is the influence of the word formation understanding on students writing skill at fifth semester in STAIN Pamekasan, whereas the objectives of study are to identify the correlation between the students of word formation understanding and their writing skill at fifth semester in STAIN Pamekasan and to measure significance is influence of the word formation understanding on students writing skill at fifth semester in STAIN pamekasan.
Writing is a way of communicating a message to a reader for a purpose. Composing good writing is supposed to concern with the general components of writing, those are: contents, form, grammar, style and mechanic. Word formation is related with components of writing that in this case word formation is process of building new words or how the words made which is starting from the letters to a word which has meaning.
This research uses quantitative research design where the data is analyzed by using statistical procedures. This research is correlation research which involves variable X as independent variable (students' word formation
understanding) and vable Y as.dependent varible ( dents' writing skill). The population of this research is the students m wntmg class at the fifth semester of TBI in STAIN Pamekasan academic year 2016-2017, including A, B, C, D, E, F, and G class. Additionally, the sample of this research is 40 students by using simple random sampling. The instruments of research are item test which is used to get students' word formation understanding score (variable X) and documentation which is used to get students' writing skill score (variable Y).The researcher also gets that the test used has been valid and reliable. Those are proved that the researcher uses content validity and reliability value is higher than r table. The researcher gets the documentation from the writing assignment that given by the lecture of TBI at fifth semester in STAIN Pamekasan academic year 2016-2017.
The result of this research is that there is enough correlation between variable X as (independent variable) and variable Y (dependent variable). It is proved by the result of the correlation value that is 0, 6154 and it is higher than r table in 5% significance.
Based on the result of the research, it can be conclude that there is correlation between students' word formation understanding and their writing skill at the fifth semester of TBI in STAIN Pamekasan academic year 2016.. 2017. The researcher also proposes some suggestion to some educational elements such as teacher, students or the readers and also to the future researchers.
