IMPROVING THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT USING SPECIAL PHOTO AT MTS AL-FURQON PALENGAAN DAYA PAMEKASAN

The background of the study in this research was based on the students’
difficulties in comprehending descriptive text writing. Some of the reasons were
the method of the English teaching process was not interesting, and there were
teachers that still used traditional method. So, it will difficult for students to
achieve the teaching and learning target. In order to solve this problem the teacher
should have creative activity, and the using of special photo can be an alternative
way as a learning media that will make students enjoy and easy to write.
This study is aimed at responding the following questions: How can a
special photo improve the eighth grade students’ ability in writing descriptive text
at MTS Al-Furqon Palengaan Daya Pamekasan? Then the objective of the
research is to describe how a special photo media can improve the students’
descriptive writing skill at the eighth grade of MTS Al-Furqon Palengaan Daya.
The study was designed as Collaborative Classroom Action Research. It
was done collaboratively with one of the English teachers. The subjects of the
study were 22 students of Eighth Grade in MTS Al-Furqon Palengaan Daya
Pamekasan. The study consisted of two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two
meetings which took one month for all cycles. In the planning stage, the
researcher designed lesson plans, research instruments, and the criteria of success.
In implementing the action, the researcher conducted the research based on the
lesson plan. In observing the action, the researcher collected the data through
observation checklist, field notes and questionnaires. In reflecting the action, the
researcher achieved the criteria of success or not.
During the implementation of the action, the result of the test showed that
the average of students’ score in the cycle I test was 70; the average of students’
score in the cycle II test was 85. The achievement of the test in cycle II showed
that the treatment was successful because the criteria of success of the
implementation of special photo can be said successful if 85% of students’
reached standard minimum score that was 70. In line with this result, the
researcher concluded that the research improved students’ skill in writing
descriptive text.
From the result of this study, it can be stated that the using of special
photo were effective and very useful. It can be seen from the significant
improvement of students test result during cycle I and Cycle II. However, the
researcher recommends the English teachers to use special photo as an alternative
way in improving students’ writing skill in descriptive texts especially when the
students get difficulties in generating and organizing ideas. There were some
suggestions that are proposed by the writer: For teacher, makes the teaching and
learning process interesting; for the Students are more active during the teaching
learning process; and for the further researcher, the result of this study as
reference to other researches with different skills or subject; for the reader, this
thesis is far from being perfect. So the writers will accept good suggestions and
constructive criticism to make this thesis perfect and the writer also hopes that the
thesis will be useful and contribute some valuable thing to the writers himself and
all readers in general.
