This study is concerned with discussing about primbon that analyzed by
using semiotics theory. The primary data is written from an interpreting meaning
of sign on primbon by using semiotics theory, especially denotation and
connotation theory by Roland Barthes.
In this study refers to semiotics study because Semiotics is a science that
studies the life of signs within society is conceivable while signs take the form of
words, images, sounds, odours, flavours, acts or objects, but such things have no
intrinsic meaning and become signs only when we invest them with meaning.
This study takes a sign on primbon and then the sign will be interpreted by
Primbon personage in Konang village. The researcher use two kinds of primbon,
there are old primbon and new primbon. Old primbon is primbon that written by
Ajisaka by using Javanese language while new primbon is modern primbon from
Labib M. Z. & Maftuh ahnan that have been written by using Indonesian
language.
There are two problem statements in this study. The first one is how can
Konang’s society believe on primbon. The second one is what are the semiotics
denotation and connotation meaning of sign on primbon interpreted by Primbon
personage of Konang village.
This research is arranged to give information and knowledge about one
kind of tradition of Madura that still alive. Besides that, this research will show up
to all of people that the tradition of Madurese can be analyzed by using English
language and linguistics.
In the process of composing this thesis, the researcher uses Qualitative
research and content analysis in analyzing meaning of sign on primbon. The data
is collected by doing observation, interview, and documentation. The data is taken
from Primbon personage of Konang village and the society of Konang Pabegkon
rustic.
As the result of the study, the writer finds out that there are two kinds of
primbon that believed and used in Konang village. Both of them are same in the
amount of neptu, but they have different in the name of signs. After that, the signs
are interpreted by Primbon personage and getting connotation meaning. The last
process is the connotation meaning is analyzed by using semiotics theory by
Roland Barthes.
Based on the result above, it is suggested for Konang’s society to maintain
primbon as a tradition of Konang village because it is a tradition of ancestral and
also Indonesian cultural wealth and for other society who does not believe on
primbon must believe that qadla and qadar have been established by Allah. And
then it is suggested for College students who want to make another research about
primbon or semiotics in different research context and research design.
