THE ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ERROR IN USING EXPRESSION OF ASKING AND GIVING OPINION AT THE FIFTH SEMESTER OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STAIN PAMEKASAN

Speaking is one of the important skills has to be mastered by the students in learning English. When the students are able to communicate orally, they would be able to express their thoughts, feeling, opinions, and experiences. In this case, common English expression has the important role in improving speaking skill, expression of asking and giving opinion for instance. These expressions are often forgotten by the students so that they are difficult to ask for an opinion and to express their idea or opinion well. Thereby, errors are often committed on their spoken language especially in asking and giving opinion. This research is focused on the kinds of students’ error in using expression of asking and giving opinion in speaking activity, the factors influencing them commit the error in the using of expression of asking and giving opinion, and also the implication of the students’ error toward their speaking performance.
Furthermore, this research uses descriptive design because it aims to examine a phenomenon of the students’ error in using expression of asking and giving opinion in speaking activity explained descriptively. The researcher uses class of cross cultural understanding (CCU) as field of research because the lecturer usually uses discussion to convey the material and encourage the students to be active by asking them to speak English in every chance, so it will help the researcher to obtain the number of data.
In obtaining the data, the researcher used observation, interview, and documentation. The researcher observed the process of teaching and learning in classroom of cross cultural understanding (CCU) subject; the researcher interviewed the students and the lecturer of CCU subject, and took some documentations such as video and audio record, photos, and course out line of CCU subject.
As the result of research, it reveals that the students have difficulty in constructing their opinion by using expression of asking and giving opinion in which there are some errors of the expression they used, are in omission and transfer error. The errors which the students committed are influenced by some factors: less of vocabulary, confidence, speaking practice, and knowledge. In this case, the errors give some implications toward the students’ performance in which they feel not confident and often occur misunderstanding on message they convey.
Based on the result above, it is suggested for English lecturer to focus on the students’ process of learning and the correction or feedback given should be selective. Then, it is suggested for the readers to learn more the common expression of asking and giving opinion in which there are a lot of expression could be used to ask for opinion and give opinion so that it could enrich the reader’s vocabulary and phrases to improve speaking skill.
