Grammar is traditionally subdivided into two different but inter-related areas of study morphology and syntax. Grammar mastery is someone who have comprehensive knowledge or skill in a subject. Syntax knowledge is knowledge that have concerning in making of phrase, clause, and sentence. Some students sometimes have some problems in analyze a syntactic sentence. One of problems is the students can not differ the sentence, phrase, clause or word in analyzing a sentence.
Based on that case the researcher feels interested in conducting a research about the correlation between students' grammar mastery and students' knowledge in analyze syntax of the 5th semester of TBI in STAIN Pamekasan.The purpose is to know do the students who have a good score in grammar also a good score in syntax at the 5th semester of TBI in STA.IN Pamekasan academic year 2015-2016_
This research is using the quantitative approach with a research design called correlation design that is correlation which correlates two variables, where the students' grammar mastery is as the independent variable, while the students' syntax knowledge is as the dependent variable. The research data of this research is by using the instrument of documentation, with the sample which consists of 36 students and it is taken from student fifth semester. The value of grammar mastery researcher takes from staff academic. t is to .check the students' grammar mastery. The value of students' syntax knowleag'e researcher takes from the syntax's lecture. It is to measure students' syntax knowledge. And the data obtained through the instruments will be analyzed by using the formula of correlation product moment.
The research result which is found by the researcher shows that the
students' grammar mastery who have good score that also do not have good score in analyze syntax of the 5thsemester of TBJ in STAJN Pamekasan. This statement is based on the statistical analysis where the index of r-value which is obtained as
-0,17 is lower that the r-table either inthe significance level of 5% by the value as
0.334 or of 1% by the value as 0.430.
Thus, based on the analysis result above the researcher suggests to the
English lecture that they in this case should also pay attention to the other things which correlate so that the students are able to combine one subject with other
subject. '
