In teaching learning process, teachers are demanded to be able to
choose learning models that can push students’s enthusiastic to be
active in their learning experience. In this condition, students will have
high motivation in learning whereas motivation is essential to success.
Problem based learning model is one of learning models that can be
implemented in the class.
There are three focuses in this study. The first is how the teacher
implement problem based learning model on students’ motivation in
English learning of the eleventh grade students at Senior High School 1
Pademawu. The second is what are the strengths of problem based
learning model on students’ motivation in English learning of the
eleventh grade students at Senior High School 1 Pademawu. The third
is what are the weaknesses of problem based learning model on
students’ motivation in English learning of the eleventh grade students
at Senior High School 1 Pademawu.
This study applied qualitative approach and used descriptive
research to describe the result of research about the implementation of
problem based learning model on students’ motivation in English
learning at Senior High School 1 Pademawu. The subjects of the
research are the teacher and students who learn English using problem
based learning model in the class. The object of the research is
implementing problem based learning model and learning process of
students. The data are gotten from observation, interview, and
documentation. Observation is used by researcher to know the process
of implementing problem based learning model on students’ motivation
in learning process at the class by using observation sheet. Interview is
used to collect data about the implementation of problem based learning
model and students’ motivation by asking some list of questions to
teacher and some students. Some documentation which needed to
support data are lesson plan, year and semester program, students’
name list, and some pictures of teaching learning process.
The result of this study showed that the teacher implement problem
based learning model on students’ motivation in English learning of the
eleventh grade students at Senior High School 1 Pademawu by asking
students to solve four problems concerning how to make a fruit salad
included the materials that needed, steps to make it, the language
features and the generic structures of procedure text. They were
facilitated by medias like pictures and mobile phone that connected to
internet as source of information to solve the problems. After the
6
students found the answer of the problems, they must made it into a
good procedure text that contained the language features and the
generic structures of procedure text. And then, the procedure text about
how to make a fruit salad which they made must be compared with
other procedure text which the teacher prepared. After that, the teacher
asked the students to present their work in front of the class. They
presented their work about how to make a fruit salad by using real
materials to make fruit salad like fruits, milk, etc.
The strengths of problem based learning model on students’
motivation in English learning of the eleventh grade students at Senior
High School 1 Pademawu are students have motivation in learning,
creating interactive learning between member in a group, can
understood the material easily, increase students’ knowledge, and
creating enjoyable learning activity. The weaknesses of problem based
learning model on students’ motivation in English learning of the
eleventh grade students at Senior High School 1 Pademawu are this
learning model was not supported for student who had low-level
competence, this learning model needed much time, students had
different learning style like work in group and work individually,
teacher teaching style influenced students’ understanding in learning
process, different character of students also influenced the problem
solving, and giving of facility could make students lazy because seeking
the solution of the problems was very easy, giving the problems must
be suitable with the characteristic of problems in problem based
learning model.
Based on these result, it is suggested for the English teacher
understand more how to implement a learning model especially
problem based learning model before implement it in the class in order
to be suitable with the goal of that learning model. It is suggested for
school to select the educators who have good competence in their
faculty. And for students are suggested to have high motivation in
English learning
