THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ GRAMMAR ABILITY AND STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL AT THE EIGHTH GRADE OF SMP ISLAM AN NAWAH LOAS BAKONG BATUKERBUY PASEAN PAMEKASAN 2016-2017

In learning English, There are four English basic skills that must be taught to English learners that are; listening, speaking, reading and writing. But speaking becomes the most important one and demand to be mastered because actually all English learners have the same goal that is they can be seen successful in learning English is when they are able to use the language or can speak accurately and fluently with other people. Furthermore, to reach this aim English learner should know how to use different word and phrases in sentences, it means that they must be familiarized to the set of rules that must be followed to make the language in good arrangement correctly which is called as grammar. Grammar is the rules for forming words and making sentences. In this study, the researcher will conduct a research about the correlation between students’ grammar ability and students speaking skill at the eighth grade of SMP Islam An Nawah Loas Bakong Batukerbuy Pasean Pamekasan.
This research has two problems. The first is to know the correlation between students’ grammar ability and students speaking skill at the eighth grade of SMP Islam An Nawah Laos Bakong Batukerbuy Pasean Pamekasan. The second is to measure how significant correlation between students’ grammar ability and students speaking skill at the eighth grade of SMP Islam An Nawah Laos Bakong Batukerbuy Pasean Pamekasan.
In this case, the researcher used quantitative approach by using correlational design. The population is at the eighth grade of SMP Islam An Nawah Loas Bakong Batukerbuy Pasean Pamekasan, which contains of 25 students. The researcher uses test and documentation as the instruments of gathering data and uses product moment’s pattern to analyse the data.
The result of this research showed that the eighth grade students’ grammar ability correlate with students’ speaking skill at SMP Islam An Nawah Laos Bakong Batukerbuy Pasean Pamekasan because the alternative hypothesis is accepted, which the significance statistically is 5%. It proved that the obtained rxy is higher than the value of rtable (rxy: 0,775 > rtable: 0,396).
Based on the result above, the researcher suggested for SMP Islam An Nawah Laos Bakong Batukerbuy Pasean Pamekasan must provide best program in the school to give best service for all students. Suggestion for committee must cooperate well with all of educational server in the school creating good programs then evaluation must be conducted continuously moreover it is a new school which just have been build two years ago that should always try to find out new innovations for better improvement.
Suggestion for the teachers suggested to have a high motivation for the students who does not have a good grammar ability and does not interest to speak up in English, gives more attention to them so they may study hard, keep spirit and facilities all students to increase their interest in learning English. Suggestion for the students must obey the rules which are available in the school. The students must pay close attention to the teacher’s explanation and should be active students in order to be able to increase their knowledge.
